Edison Castilho Junior
WOODWIND TECHNCIAN
Edison has dedicated over 25 years to instrument servicing and repairs, world-renowned for his passion, extensive knowledge and superb craftsmanship of woodwind instruments, particularly flute, clarinet and oboe. He studied flute performance at the Manuel de Falla Higher Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and clarinet at the Conservatory of Popular Music in Curitiba, Brazil. He also studies saxophone privately. He began his repair career in Brazil, before working in Argentina, New Zealand and finally, Australia.
After many years of study, experimentation, and testing, Edison has developed his own unique techniques for repairing high-end handmade flutes, professional piccolos, clarinets and oboes. He utilises a combination of materials, oils, and calibration techniques for the mechanism and pads, resulting in extremely quiet, precise, and long-lasting instrument performance. For piccolos, he uses special custom-made pads only available at Notus Winds.
Edison is also an expert in the development, design, and customisation of key systems for flutes and clarinets, fine gold and silver soldering, and tuning correction for woodwind instruments. He has participated in several international courses in advanced repair; fine soldering of gold, silver, and bronze; lathe operation; and wood restoration techniques. Edison also studied technical drawing of mechanical parts and components, fine arts, and artistic design. Throughout his career, Edison has also presented various flute repair workshops, including "Flute Repair and Its Secrets for Every Flutist" at the biennial Australian Flute Festival, where he was also the resident technician.
Edison brings with him a prestigious career and a great international reputation, having worked for musicians and orchestras worldwide, including flutists such as Paul Edmund Davies (UK), Roberto Álvarez (ESP), and Andrew Macleod (AU); clarinettists such as Frank Celata (AU), Alex Morris (AU), Phil Green (AU), David Griffiths (AU), John Lewis (AU) and David Rowden (AU ); oboists such as Shefali Pryor (AU), Alexandre Oguey (AU/CH), Liz Chee (AU), Jonathan Ryan (AU) and Bede Hanley (USA); and saxophonists such as Mark Taylor (AU) Roger Manins (NZ), Craig Walters (NZ) and Paul Cutlan (AU).
