The Essence of Backun

The Essence is clarity, reimagined. Light in the hands but bold in sound, this entirely new series channels the golden age of clarinet playing through Backun’s relentless drive for innovation. With handcrafted key work in the style of our Custom Clarinets, an enhanced left-hand mechanism and a striking new design, Essence is the modern French-style clarinet – refined, responsive and incredibly resonant.

Shaped by years of hands-on testing with Backun Artists across North America, Asia, and Europe, the Essence reflects the artistic vision of the world’s most demanding performers. Launched in celebration of Backun’s 25th Anniversary, it delivers the rich tonal core and flawless intonation that define our instruments – now more accessible than ever for players ready to make their mark.

Essence Barrels and Bells, with first-of-their-kind sculpted metal rings, project warmth and brilliance with ease. The optional Low F Vent mechanism ensures spot-on tuning across every register, unlocking performance once reserved for the elite.

This isn’t just a lighter Lumière – it’s the new benchmark for French-style clarinets. And when only the best will do, the choice is clear: Backun.
